Brooklyn Central Library - Phase 1

Brooklyn, NY | 2021 | 5,500 SF

Designed by Toshiko Mori, Phase 1 of a multiphase revitalization of Brooklyn’s Central Library was completed in 2021. The project entailed the refurbishment of existing features and the transformation of administrative areas into public zones. Honey-toned oak, light-colored flooring and metal accents are used throughout the overhauled spaces. The lighting in this 21st century library promotes both learning and a sense of community.

Efficient and programmed for a diversity of needs, warm fluorescent sources are seamlessly integrated into the architectural design. The diffuse light democratically illuminates each space without distraction and computer screen glare. The library’s soaring lobby features new lighting and the nearby “New and Noteworthy” book gallery features a custom designed metal ceiling sculpture with specialty lighting that is visible from the street.
