Lakeshore Park

Knoxville, TN | 2024 | 185 acres

Lakeshore Park is an 185-acre park on the Tennessee River. Formerly on the site of a state-owned mental health institution, it was acquired by the Lakeshore Park Conservancy and re-purposed as a public park in 1996. In 2017, Nelson Byrd Woltz was developed a Landscape Master Plan Update and Tillett Lighting Design was engaged to design the lighting for Phase II, which includes active and passive recreation areas, three pavilions, a new playground, an outdoor amphitheater, expanded parking and an Oval earhtwork with expansive views of the Smoky Mountains.

Lakeshore Park required a lighting program that balanced the needs of park users with the need to protect the natural beauty of the night sky. Softly glowing, functional lighting and carefully aimed and shielded luminaires create a friendly nighttime park atmosphere for families and stargazers alike. The lighting strategy for the pavilions transformed the structures into “lanterns” in the landscape. The Oval earthwork was illuminated by heavily shielded bollards, protecting nighttime views of the Tennessee River and Smoky Mountains while creating a subtle “string of pearls” effect that draws park users to the stunning overlook.
