Horwitz-Wasserman Holocaust Memorial Plaza
Philadelphia, PA | 2018 | .25 acres
We worked with WRT and the Philadelphia Holocaust Remembrance Foundation to improve the experience of the plaza around Nathan Rapoport’s “Monument to Six Million Jewish Martyrs.” The redesigned plaza provides a contemplative space within the surrounding urban fabric, and re-positions the memorial as a civic destination on the iconic Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The lighting program first created a feeling of quiet dignity and simplicity to honor the memorial’s intent and protect it from the light of the busy thoroughfare. Focal lighting was used to draw attention to significant elements of the memorial, including train tracks from the Treblinka death camp embedded in the plaza pavement.
